Most cyclists are most comfortable on a bar that is just as wide as their shoulders, measured as the distance between the shoulder joints. Although, wider bars open the chest for better breathing and more leverage, they are also less aerodynamic. Finding the  balance between the two is largely a matter of personal preference.
